Dr. David Perdue is a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, and is the only board-certified American Indian gastroenterologist in the world. Dr. Perdue earned his undergraduate degree from Washington State University, his master's degree in public health from the University of Colorado, Denver, and his M.D. from the University of Washington. While in medical school he completed the American Indian Health Pathway, externed at the Seattle Indian Health Board, and completed research with the CDC's Arctic Investigation Program in Anchorage, Alaska. He received his internal medicine and gastroenterology training at the University of Minnesota, where he subsequently spent 3 years on the faculty.

Dr. Perdue currently splits his time between clinical practice with Minnesota Gastroenterology P.A. in Minneapolis, where he is their preferred provider for American Indian and Alaska Native patients, and research.

Research Interests

Dr. Perdue's research focuses on understanding the gastrointestinal cancer disparities experienced by American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. His special interest is in explaining the nearly five-fold difference in colorectal cancer incidence among AI/AN populations in different regions of the U.S. He is also working to understand the barriers AI/AN men and women face in getting screened for cancer. His current active research projects include: the feasibility of a mobile endoscopy program for Indian reservations (IHS); differences in colorectal cancer screening use among AI/AN and white women enrolled in an HMO (NIH); the ability of fecal immunochemical tests to risk stratify Alaska Natives for colonoscopy screening (IHS); and a study of Minnesota AI/AN's self-reported barriers to colorectal cancer screening (NIH).
