Dr. Garwood received his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1985 from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He conducted postdoctoral training in 1985-1986 at University of California, Santa Cruz, and in 1986-1987 at the University of Minnesota.

Research Interests

My objective is to develop and apply new non-invasive methods in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and imaging (MRI) to research cancer. The general aim is to better understand the unique functional and molecular properties of cancer, and to improve the clinical management of the disease, by using MRS/MRI methodologies.

Current specific research goals are threefold:

  • To apply theoretical formalisms to describe the magnetic resonance phenomenon.
  • To exploit the unique properties of frequency-modulated RF techniques to enhance sensitivity and data quality in MRI and MRS.
  • To expose molecular properties of cancers using MRI and MRS, and to use these for making diagnoses and for evaluating and guiding cancer treatments, all non-invasively.
