Six internal grant programs are available through the Cancer Center. The goal of these programs is to foster the development of and provide support for novel research ideas that focus on a problem in cancer. In turn, the Cancer Center expects that internal funding will lead to nationally peer reviewed funding.
Specific programs and their objectives follow. Additional information regarding each mechanism can be accessed by clicking the link provided.
In prior years, awards have ranged from a minimum of $25,000 to a maximum of $50,000 in direct costs for one year. Awards will be made in $25,000 modules (up to $30,000/year for the Leukemia Research Fund). The total funding available for Brainstorm Awards is $100,000 (up to four modules); for the Cancer Population Sciences Awards, $50,000 (two modules); for the Translational Breast Cancer Research Awards, $75,000 (three modules); for the Translational Sarcoma Cancer Research Awards, $50,000 (two modules); and for the Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center (TTURC) Pilot Grants Program, $50,000 (two modules). Funding for the Leukemia Research Fund awards is not fixed and is based on quality of applications.
Applicants may apply for one or more of these award types. If you wish to have your application considered for more than one mechanism, your Statement of Intent should indicate the award mechanisms appropriate for review. Please note that each mechanism has varying page and budget restrictions, although it is possible for one application to meet all guidelines.
Specific instructions including appropriate budgetary requests, can be found by clicking on the links for each award above.
The application deadline for all six internal grant programs is Friday April 18, 2008, by 4 p.m. Applicants will be notified of the review outcome in early June. Awards will be made for one year, with an anticipated activation date of July 1, 2008.
The objective of the Brainstorm Awards is to foster new interdisciplinary collaborations encompassing novel, hypothesis-driven studies of cancer or a cancer-related topic. The proposed project must be a joint, collaborative effort by at least two Masonic Cancer Center members from different programs or different disciplines, and must represent a new collaborative proposal.

The objective of the Population Sciences Awards is to foster innovative research in Population Sciences which has the potential to form the basis of future research initiatives. Applicants must be members of the Cancer Center.

The objective of the Leukemia Research Fund Awards is to support research in two categories: Basic and Translational. The proposals for Basic research should focus on the cellular and/or molecular mechanisms that govern the development or progression of cancer, with a priority on leukemia and related diseases; proposals could include relevant models in developmental biology that provide insight into the development and progression of cancer. The Translational proposals should focus on the development and/or analysis of innovative approaches for treating leukemia and related diseases; areas could include, but would not be restricted to: gene therapy, tumor targeting, cellular therapy, novel cytotoxic agents, tumor angiogenesis, regulation of apoptosis, or stem cell procurement. Applicants must be members of the Cancer Center.

The objective of the Translational Breast Cancer Research Awards is to support research in the biology, prevention, detection, diagnosis, and/or treatment of breast cancer. Applicants must be members of the Cancer Center.

The objective of the Translational Sarcoma Cancer Research Awards is to support research in the biology, prevention, detection, diagnosis, and/or treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcomas. Applicants must be members of the Cancer Center.
The purpose of the TTURC Pilot Grants Program is to provide rapid access to seed money to support innovative studies aimed at reducing the harm from tobacco dependence, or strategies to reduce tobacco use among populations that have been refractory to smoking cessation efforts. Proposals may involve any level of inquiry, e.g. molecular, genetic, preclinical, clinical, epidemiologic or public policy.
