The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to announce a new grant program designed to identify research questions of current significance to multiple disciplines. Modeled after the "Keck Futures Initiative," the Minnesota Futures Grant Program will encourage University of Minnesota researchers to create new collaborative connections through symposia and act upon those ideas through interdisciplinary research awards. The National Academies Keck Futures Initiative is accepting applications to participate in "The Future of Human Healthspan: Demography, Evolution, Medicine, and Bioengineering" conference, November 14-16, in Irvine, California. Each year the Futures Initiative hosts a conference to bring together researchers from academia, industry, and government laboratories to ask questions about -- and to discover interdisciplinary connections between -- important areas of cutting-edge research. Approximately 100 researchers in the United States will be invited to attend the conference, representing disciplines in science, engineering, medicine, and social science. Applications must be submitted by June 7. The National Academies Keck Futures Initiative will pay all travel expenses, including lodging and meals, for invited attendees. Healthy Food, Healthy Lives (HFHL) Initiative Request for Proposals

Amount: 3 awards, up to $200,000/year for 3 years
The Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives (HFHL) initiative is supported by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The deans of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences (CFANS) and School of Public Health (SPH) co-lead this initiative with CFANS serving as the fiscal agent for the initiative. The HFHL Council of Deans includes the CFANS and SPH deans together with the deans of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Medical School, and Extension.The HFHL Council of Deans is requesting applications for research grants to fund faculty research teams in the five collegial units collaborating in this presidential initiative. Funds will be distributed through a competitive review process. Three projects will be funded through this request for proposals. One award will be made to a research team for each of the following priority areas:
- Prevention of diet-related chronic disease and obesity
- Food safety, from farm to table
- Public policy and public education to influence eating behavior

AACR Funding Opportunity for Metastatic Colon Cancer Research

Amount: $500,000-$1,000,000The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is now accepting applications for the 2007 Jeannik M. Littlefield-AACR Grants in Metastatic Colon Cancer Research. These grants will provide support for innovative cancer research projects designed to accelerate the discovery and development of new agents to treat metastatic colon cancer and/or for pre-clinical research with direct therapeutic intent. Special emphasis will be placed on research that holds promise for leading to individualized therapeutic options for treatment in the near future or for developing promising new cancer therapeutics for metastatic colon cancer, which will translate into clinical applications within a one- to two-year period.

The goal of this opportunity is to foster exploratory/developmental nutrition and cancer prevention research. Specifically, this initiative seeks to promote cancer prevention research to identify and characterize molecular targets for bioactive food components. A bioactive food component is defined as a dietary constituent that has a health benefit by altering one or more cellular processes when provided in quantities over and beyond that needed for basic nutrition.
