University of Minnesota Cancer Center
The orange icon indicates that an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is available for subscribing to content on the Cancer Center Web site.
These feeds, also known as news feeds, allow you to see when new content is added to the site without having to visit the Web site. Most blogs have RSS feeds as do most major newspaper sites including the The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Star Tribune.
RSS feeds can be viewed through handheld devices, software on your computer, personalized Web pages, and Web browsers.
To subscribe to an RSS feed, you need RSS feed reader software (also called "news readers" or "news aggregators").
The easiest way to subscribe is to use a browser like Firefox, which has the ability to subscribe to RSS feeds built-in. Firefox calls it a "Live Bookmark." Apple's Safari browser also has a feature for subscribing to feeds.
You can also use the RSS feed readers available through Web sites (e.g. Bloglines, Google Reader, my Yahoo!) or download feed reading software for your PC, Mac, or handheld device. Visit the BBC Web site for a list of available software.
Apple's iTunes software makes it easy to subscribe to RSS feeds of audio files, also known as podcasts. In the Advanced menu in iTunes, select "Subscribe to Podcast." It will give you a box where you can paste in the RSS feed URL.
