(Jan. 24, 2008) Shana Sturla, Ph.D., member of the Cancer Center's Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Research Program, has been named a McKnight Land-Grant Professor for 2008-2010. Sturla is an assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy's Department of Medicinal Chemistry.
The University of Minnesota Office of the Provost and the Graduate School co-sponsor this program to advance the careers of promising junior faculty. The McKnight Land-Grant Professorship is a two-year appointment that includes a research grant in each of the two years. In addition, each professor is awarded either a year's leave to pursue research during the second year of the award or a supplementary research grant.
Recipients are nominated by their academic departments and are chosen for their potential to make important contributions to their field; the originality and innovation of their ideas and achievements; the significance of their research; the quality of their publications; and their potential for attracting outstanding students.
Sturla focuses on chemistry in cancer research. Her laboratory seeks to understand how cancers are initiated, and advance treatment using chemical tools. Information about the program and a list of all recipients is available on the Graduate School Web site.
