Cancer Center members help students, community groups understand cancer

Chris Pennell, Ph.D., speaks about cancer biology to high school students in their classrooms and at the Cancer Center.

Cancer Center members often speak to student and community groups about cancer biology, specific cancers, and cancer research. Members who are willing to be asked to speak in a community setting, or to participate in a Cancer U program or the Cancer Center's annual exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota should contact Outreach Director Marva Bohen, R.N., bohen001@umn.edu, 612-624-2620.

Recent speaking engagements in the community have included:

  • Chris Pennell, Ph.D., spoke about cancer biology and therapy in a talk titled "Good Cells Gone Bad" at Bloomington Kennedy High School November 21, 2006.
  • Marva Bohen, R.N., spoke about cancer at a community education program at Waite Park Community School in Minneapolis November 28 and for a group of African immigrants at a high rise in Minneapolis on the same date; she gave another presentation for a group of African immigrants at another Minneapolis high rise on December 11, 2006.
  • Doug Yee, M.D. (breast cancer), David Perdue, M.D. (colorectal cancer), and Rahel Ghebre, M.D. (cervical cancer), spoke at a program December 2, 2006, at the Division of Indian Work in Minneapolis.
