Adult survivors of childhood cancer face health issues

Ann Mertens

Ann Mertens, Ph.D.

Cancer Center member Ann Mertens, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, co-authored a study published in the October 12, 2006 New England Journal of Medicine that found almost three-fourths of pediatric cancer survivors will have a chronic health problem within 30 years after cancer diagnosis, with 40 percent experiencing a serious, life-threatening, disabling, or fatal condition. The findings are based on results from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.
