Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota
Carol Lange, Ph.D., is the director of the Cancer Center Seminar Series
The Cancer Center Seminar Series for the 2006-2007 academic year begins Tuesday, Sept. 12, with a lecture from Haojie Huang, Ph.D. Huang, an assistant professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, is a member of the Masonic Cancer Center's Cancer Progression and Metastasis Program. The title of his presentation is "Deregulated tumor suppressor function of FOX01 in prostate cancer."
Cancer Center Seminar Series lectures are held throughout the academic year from noon to 1 p.m. every Tuesday in Room 450 of the Masonic Cancer Research Building. (View the series calendar.) The series is aimed at Cancer Center members, undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical fellows and physicians, as well as research technicians and scientists at the University of Minnesota. Colleagues at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Duluth are able to attend the seminars via video-conference.
The seminars began about 10 years ago when Cancer Center Director John Kersey, M.D., asked Deputy Director Tucker LeBien, Ph.D., to develop the series. LeBien recalls, "The philosophy from the beginning was to ensure that the series focused on high-quality scientific presentations with a mixture of external and internal speakers. It was also important to have a range of topics that reflected the broad research interests of Cancer Center members working in basic, clinical, and population studies."
Speakers are proposed to the director of the Cancer Center Seminar Series Carol Lange, Ph.D., who is an associate professor in the Departments of Medicine and Pharmacology, and a member of the Masonic Cancer Center's Breast Cancer and Translational Research Programs. Lange ensures that the speakers represent a balanced mix of research in various areas of cancer biology, etiology, and prevention. Robin Toy, the seminar coordinator, arranges the publicity and logistics for each seminar. A link to the series calendar is available on the front page of the Masonic Cancer Center Web site under "Education & Events." Each week's seminar also is announced every Tuesday morning in Cancer Center Update, the weekly e-newsletter for members and staff.
