Experts discuss role of diet, exercise in preventing cancer at President's Cancer Panel meeting

Cancer Center member Robert W. Jeffery, Ph.D., director of the University of Minnesota's Obesity Prevention Center, was one of the researchers invited to speak at the meeting.

"Promoting Healthy Lifestyles to Reduce the Risk of Cancer" was the focus of the President's Cancer Panel meeting September 11, 2006 . The University of Minnesota Cancer Center hosted the all-day, fact-finding meeting where the panel heard testimony from invited participants and the public on current research and existing knowledge gaps on how obesity, physical activity, and nutrition impact cancer risk.

About the President's Cancer Panel

The President's Cancer Panel was established with the 1971 Cancer Act to advise the President on matters about cancer. The current panel appointed by President Bush includes LaSalle Leffall, Jr., M.D., chair of the panel and professor of surgery at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C.; champion cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong, founder of the Lance Armstrong Foundation; and Margaret Kripke, Ph.D., professor of immunology and executive vice president and chief academic officer of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
