Tournament raises $67,500 for Masonic Cancer Center
Representatives from the Stick It to Cancer Tournament visited the Masonic Cancer Center June 23 to present a check for $67,500 for breast cancer research. The annual women's hockey tournament was held in April at the National Sports Center Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn. The Masonic Cancer Center is the designated recipient of funds raised at the tournament, which this year featured nearly 100 girls' and women's teams playing on pink ice, and raised $22,500 more than it did in 2007.

Congratulations to Donald Connelly, M.D., Ph.D., co-leader of the Biostatistics and Informatics Core, who received a 2008 caBIG™ Teamwork Award in recognition of significant contributions to the caBIG™ community that demonstrated the use of collaboration to achieve goals. The award was presented during the caBIGTM annual conference in June in Washington, D.C., by Kenneth Buetow, Ph.D., NCI associate director for bioinformatics and information technology and director of the NCI Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology.

Saluja speaks on pancreatic cancer at Lodz meeting
Ashok Saluja, Ph.D., Tumor Biology and Progression program member, gave a talk at the European Pancreatic Club and the International Association of Pancreatology (IAP-EPC) meeting in Lodz, Poland, on "Protective mechanisms for pancreatic cell damage." Saluja also chaired two sessions: "Pancreatic cancer: the basics for young scientists" and "Basic I: Acute pancreatitis."

Welcome new staff
Peter Fleck has re-joined the Biomedical Informatics Support team at the Masonic Cancer Center to work on various aspects of our external and internal Web sites. Members and staff may remember that Peter provided Mac support for the Help Desk and was the Webmaster for the cancer center's Web site. Peter can be reached at 625-4289, fleck004@umn.edu. Illusion Theater presents "and they said I wouldn't make it," by Samuel G. Roberson, Jr.

In this one-man show, local actor and playwright Samuel G. Roberson, Jr., tells his own story of surviving leukemia as a child—a story of a young boy and his family against all odds triumphing over this disease. Roberson says, "I write this story for all the young black children with cancer who don't receive the things they need because black people don't know about cancer. I write this story for those wonderful kids I met in the hospital and at the camps who never saw a cancer success story to give them hope. I write this story because it hasn't been told." Rein in Sarcoma 2008
July 21, 2008, 6-9:15 p.m., Cafesjian's Carousel and Como Park Visitors Center, St. Paul
Rein in Sarcoma 2008 will feature unlimited carousel rides; the Tropical Encounter Rainforest exhibit; live music; silent auction; raffle; and family activities, including a moon walk, face painting, bubbles, "Mr. Fun," magician "The Amazing Hondo," golf putting with prizes, and an arcade. University of Minnesota sarcoma doctors and researchers will be available during the event to answer questions about the disease. Directly preceding the event, The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation will host a free picnic from 4:30 to 6 p.m. for sarcoma survivors, patients, loved ones, and those who have lost someone to sarcoma. Prior registration is required for the picnic. Rein in Sarcoma raises funds for sarcoma research and physician education, and provides hope and relief for those affected by sarcoma. 19th Annual Twin City Polo Classic

The Twin City Polo Classic will feature activities for all in attendance, from the traditional divot stomp, to a horse parade, to musical entertainment in the family activity area. Jon Clement Mertz Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner

This annual tournament benefits the Jon Clement Mertz Endowment for Melanoma Research, which supports research being done at the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota. The tournament format is 18-hole scramble (cart included), and the event includes dinner, silent auction, and prizes. Registration fee is $500 per foursome. Hole sponsorships also are available. Macy's Glamorama 2008 is heading back to the '80s with an arcade of eye candy couture and modern sounds. Headlined by the chart-topping '80s superstar Cyndi Lauper and late '80s hip-hop sensation MC Hammer, Macy's fashion spectacular will rock the runway in true '80s style, once again supporting Children's Cancer Research Fund. Topping this year's list of designers are Varvatos USA, Michael Kors, Marc by Marc Jacobs, BCBG Runway, Donna Karan and Just Cavalli. All proceeds benefit Children's Cancer Research Fund, whose support enables the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota to continue its pioneering efforts in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of childhood cancers. Challenges and Tensions in International Research Collaborations
October 2-3, 2008, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis
Sponsored by the U.S. Office of Research Integrity and the University of Minnesota
International research collaborations are expanding rapidly, but they involve certain challenges. Speakers will discuss problems stemming from cross-national differences in the organization and funding of science, cultural perspectives, the training of students and research personnel, and legal and policy systems. They will also propose ways to mitigate the effects of these challenges in collaborative research. Scientists who collaborate or intend to collaborate internationally, other scientific research personnel, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and others interested in international collaboration are encouraged to attend.

Sallie Rosen Kaplan Fellowship for Women in Basic, Clinical, Epidemiological or Prevention Science
Foundation for NIH
Deadline: December 12, 2008
Funding: Stipend range - $46,200 - $78,000 (commensurate with level of experience). Standard self and family health insurance is provided.
Duration: 2-5 years

The Sallie Rosen Kaplan Fellowship for Women Scientists in Cancer Research is made possible by a generous bequest to the Foundation for NIH (FNIH). This is a competitive program for postdoctoral fellows applying to train in any of the National Cancer Institute's intramural research settings, including basic, clinical, epidemiological, and prevention science.

Candidates for the Sallie Rosen Kaplan Fellowship must be female, must possess a doctoral degree, and must have less than 5 years postdoctoral research experience. U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency (green card) is required. Finalists for the Kaplan fellowship will be notified by March 2009 and winners announced by May 2009. To be eligible for the Sallie Rosen Kaplan Fellowship award, the starting date of any NCI fellowship must be no earlier than December 15, 2008.
