Cancer Center reaches out at Fond du Lac Health Fair and Juneteenth festival
Marva Bohen, Cancer Center outreach director, and Sandra Rivera, community events coordinator, participated in the Fond du Lac Reservation Health Fair on June 13. The fair focused on colorectal and lung cancer. American Indians in Minnesota have a much higher incidence and mortality from these two cancers than the rest of the state's population, and markedly higher than American Indian tribes in other parts of the United States. Andrea Jones, a student from the School of Public Health also attended the fair and conducted a survey about colonoscopy with elders from the Fond du Lac band of Ojibway. Fond du Lac Human Services will use the information to assess the band members' knowledge about the importance of colonoscopy and their preferences on where to receive screenings.

Bohen and Rivera also provided cancer information at the Juneteenth Festival at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis. Juneteenth celebrates the release of the last slaves in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had freed them. The 2nd Annual Juneteenth Walk for Cancer Awareness and Survivorship for African Americans was held during the festival. Mike Underwood, from the laboratory of Peter Bitterman, M.D., also attended the festival and provided information for a cancer quiz specific to African Americans.
