Cancer Center member Bruce Peterson, M.D., was the keynote speaker at the annual Relay for Life April 20 at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. He spoke about the importance of research for enhancing treatment for cancer patients. Relay for Life is sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

April is Cancer Control Month, and the National Cancer Institute is promoting its risk assessment Web site, Cancer Risk: Understanding the Puzzle. The site includes interactive tools for measuring risk for breast, cervical, colon, lung, prostate, and skin cancers; advice on how to analyze news stories about cancer risk; and explanations of risk factors and risk exposure. The Masonic Cancer Center Web site has added a link to this useful tool.
The Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Screening Trial is now accepting proposals for use of the PLCO biorepository materials through its Etiology and Early Markers Study (EEMS). Applications for the first round for 2007 will be accepted June 1, 2007 through June 29, 2007 at 5 p.m. EDST. The second round will be from December 1, 2007 through December 29, 2007 at 5 p.m. EST.
For application information and materials visit the PLCO Web site and select the EEMS tab on the Program Administrative Resource (PAR). Individuals who do not already have access to PAR should contact the PAR PLCO Helpdesk parplcohelpdesk@westat.com and request permission to access the EEMS tab on the website. Completed proposal application and associated materials should be submitted to the EEMS Coordinating Center at the following address: plco-eems@westat.com.
Construction is underway in the area of Oak Street, University Avenue, 6th Street, and 23rd Avenue and will continue throughout the summer. As utilities are installed and portions of the boundary streets reconfigured, temporary lane closures, lane shifts, and congested traffic will occur. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking research project (R01) applications to conduct translational, clinical, therapeutic, and preventive studies and trials of neoplastic diseases in humans and encourages clinical
researchers to collaborate with basic scientists to translate insights in cancer genetics, cancer epigenetics, and cancer biology, coupled with the development of new anti-cancer agents, into innovative cancer intervention studies and trials. Studies using tumor specimens not linked to specific interventions/trials will not be responsive to this FOA.
AACR Funding Opportunities for Breast Cancer Research

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is now accepting applications for the 2007 Breast Cancer Research Foundation-AACR Grants for Translational Breast Cancer Research. Research projects must have
100% applicability to translational breast cancer. This grant is open to researchers who have acquired a doctoral degree and are affiliated with any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine, or cancer-related biomedical science anywhere in the world.

The AHC Translational Research Grant Program
Application deadline: May 18, 2007
The AHC Translational Research Grant Program will fund three new grants with up to $200,000 over two to three years. Awards will go to new projects
with no outside funding and preference will go to projects that create new collaborations. The goal is to move concepts developed at the University from basic research to clinical testing. Awards will be announced in July.
