Cancer Center launches new newsletter

 

News from your Cancer Center is a new newsletter designed to provide information about the Masonic Cancer Center's research, treatment, and education programs for donors and others interested in the work of our faculty and staff. The newsletter is being produced by the Masonic Cancer Center 's public relations and development teams. This first issue features melanoma research being done by Peter Lee, M.D., Ph.D., and Arek Dudek, M.D., and the new clinical studies being led by Jeff Miller, M.D., for hematologic malignancies and women's cancers. Other stories include a feature about a melanoma survivor, a profile of a couple who established a melanoma research endowment, sun safety tips, and information about the new Hope Lodge residence being built near the U of M's cancer treatment clinics. Cancer Center members in the journals

 

The following item was published in last week's Update with an incomplete list of Cancer Center members who contributed to the journal article. Here is the corrected version:

 

Cancer Center members Rachana Visaria, Ph.D, research associate, and John Bischof, Ph.D., professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering,

published a cover article "Enhancement of tumor thermal therapy using gold nanoparticle-assisted tumor necrosis factor-{alpha} delivery" (Visaria RK, Griffin RJ, Williams BW, Ebbini ES, Paciotti GF, Song CW, and Bischof JC) in the April issue of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics . The co-authors Robert Griffin, Ph.D., assistant professor, and Chang Song, Ph.D., professor, Department of Therapeutic Radiology; and Emad Ebbini, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, are also members of the Masonic Cancer Center . The paper was also featured on the Web site Physorg.com.

 

Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Screening Trial accepting proposals for use of PLCO biorepository materials

The Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Screening Trial is now accepting proposals for use of the PLCO biorepository materials through its Etiology and Early Markers Study (EEMS).  Proposals can be submitted to EEMS Coordinating Center via e-mail beginning June 2 through June 30, 2006 at 5 p.m. Application materials and instructions can be found online. Individuals who are not registered for access to this Web site can contact the help desk for access information.

Chemical Biology Interface Symposium June 1, 2006

 

Registration and program information is now available for the Chemical Biology Interface Symposium, Thursday, June 1 at the St. Paul campus. This symposium will focus on cutting-edge science, which combines different disciplinary approaches in chemistry, physics, molecular biology, biochemistry, etc. Guest speakers include scientists from Harvard Medical School , Genentech, University of Wisconsin- School of Pharmacy, and the University of Minnesota . Postdoctoral Research Position: Anti-Leukemia Adoptive CTL Studies

 

A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the area of adoptive CTL therapy for acute leukemia in mice using state-of-the-art techniques for simultaneously tracking CTLs and tumor cells. The project is focused on the host extrinsic and CTL intrinsic factors that limit the expansion, persistence, and function of CTLs infused into tumor bearing mice.

 

Successful applicants will a track record of accomplishments and expertise in manipulating immune cells in rodents.

Children's Cancer Research Fund 4th Annual Time to Fly Walk/Run June 24

Help win the race against childhood cancer by participating in the Time to Fly Walk/Run on Harriet Island . The fourth annual event benefiting Children's Cancer Research Fund features something for everyone: competitive runners, recreational runners and walkers, and kids of all ages. Events include a 5K walk, 10K and 5K runs, and 1K and 2K Kids' Fun Runs. Both the 10K and 5K events are certified courses. Proceeds support childhood cancer research at the University of Minnesota .
