CANCER CENTER MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

 

Levi Downs, M.D., assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was interviewed by MPR reporter Cathy Wurzer on her Morning Edition program, June 7, about cervical cancer and the Patricia clinical trial he is leading here testing a vaccine against HPV.

 

Margot Cleary, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Minnesota 's Hormel Institute and Cancer Center member, gave a podium presentation on prevention of mammary tumor development by intermittent caloric restriction at the DOD Era of Hope meeting in Philadelphia , June 8-11.

ANNUAL SALUTE TO STAFF AND FACULTY AND CANCER CENTER PICNIC ON JUNE 20, 2005

 

Join the Masonic Cancer Center 's Salute to Staff and Faculty on Monday, June 20, at 8:00 a.m. Light refreshments will be served in the atrium areas on all four floors of CCRB. Cancer Center director Dr. John Kersey will present a State-of-the-Cancer Center address at 9:00 a.m. in 450 CCRB. He will review accomplishments of the past year and goals for the coming year and will present the Years of Service recognition awards.

 

The picnic will be held that same day at East River Flats Park (directly below CCRB on the river) from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Families are welcome.

CANCER CENTER POSTER SESSION AND SYMPOSIUM NOW AVAILABLE ON-LINE

 

The oral presentations that were given at the 5 th Annual Cancer Center Poster Session and Symposium can now be accessed directly from our home page (http://www.cancer.umn.edu/)! The link is located under Events and Seminars on the right side of the page. Please note that the presentation by Lara Collier, Ph.D., “Cancer gene discovery using Sleeping Beauty-based somatic mutagenesis in the mouse,” is currently in press in Nature and will be accessible as soon as it is published.

 

Using Breeze software, we are now able to record seminar presentations and make them available on-line to researchers and others the world over who are interested in the scientific questions being discussed. For more information on this technology, call Cancer Center Computing at 626-6567.

2ND ANNUAL JOY RIDE AND MUSIC FESTIVAL TO BENEFIT CHILDREN’S CANCER RESEARCH FUND

What's better than an 80-mile road trip? An 80-mile road trip that helps kids with cancer. Join the Children’s Cancer Research Fund on a charity ride and a post-ride music festival on June 25, 2005 at Narrows Saloon North in Maple Grove, Minnesota for the 2nd Annual Joy Ride and Music Festival. It's an event for all motorcycle enthusiasts with proceeds benefiting the Children's Cancer Research Fund, which supports critical pediatric oncology research at the University of Minnesota. SEEKING RECOGNITION AWARD NOMINATIONS

 

Nominations are now open for the recognition award in Prevention and Etiology. Prevention and Etiology program staff, as well as other staff and faculty contributing to the Masonic Cancer Center in these areas, are eligible for this award. 2ND ANNUAL TEE OFF ON CANCER GOLF TOURNAMENT

It’s time to scratch that golf itch! The 2nd Annual Tee Off On Cancer Golf Tournament is right around the corner. The event has been expanded this year to include a silent auction at the American Legion, Savage on Sunday, July 17. This is followed by the golf tournament on Monday, July 18 at Creeks Bend Golf Course in New Prague. Presented by the CJM Cancer Foundation, these events support cancer screening research and education at The Masonic Cancer Center. Check-in on golf day begins at 10 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at noon. Avid golfers and novices alike are invited to participate.

How about a Cancer Center team? Registration for a foursome is $380 and includes greens fees, use of a cart, balls, a gift bag, dinner and prizes. It’s sure to be a fun day on the green. FOUNDATION SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR MESOTHELIOMA RESEARCH

Application deadline: August 15, 2005

 

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation Inc. is accepting applications research projects in pleural or perioneal mesothelioma. Eligible projects may relate to either benchwork research or clinical research and must not be presently funded or pending review. STEM CELL WORKSHOP TO BE HELD JULY 23

 

Cancer Center members will be among the presenters at the Stem Cell Workshop sponsored by the Society for Cryobiology, Biomedical Engineering Institute and Department of Mechanical Engineering

 

The goals of the workshop are to:

•  Review the present understanding of stem cell biology, plasticity as well as clinical and preclinical applications of stem cells.

•  Contrast and compare adult stem cells with hematopoietic and embryonic.

•  Provide background on processing of stem cells for human therapeutic applications.

•  Review the current understanding of stem cell preservation.

•  Summarize the opportunities and challenges for stem cell-based therapies.
